Article Abstract:An account of how the sailing experience of young Maori yachtsman Bella Johnston of Auckland, helped to save a number of soldiers from Crete in World War 2, because he was able to skipper a fishing boat, steering by the stars, on a voyage of escape to North Africa. Details of Johston's experience sailing the mullet boat NOMAD given, with an account of her later restoration in the 1970's and present ownership by Ron and Michelle Copeland. Names of various sailing and wartime comrades of Bella Johnston's are mentioned in the item. Details of 2 submarine rescues of men from Crete are given, one of which was guided by Johnston.
