Article Abstract:It was not until the 1850s until steam successfully went to sea and the 1870s before it was in regular commercial use. The chapter mentions companies set up to run steamships on the New Zealand coast and across the Tasman. The formation of the Union Company is covered, its growth by acquisition, and its early vessels mentioned.
By the late 1870s steam was becoming economic on the longer hauls. By the mid 1880s it was beginning to threaten the clippers in the United Kingdom trade.
