Title:An Early Auckland Shipbuilder
Article Abstract:Gives a short description of the birth of James William Carr in England, marriage, and emigration to New Zealand. Although he tried his luck elsewhere at different times: USA in 1850, the Kaipara in the late 1850's, and Australia in the early to mid 1860's, it was in Auckland that James Carr made his name as a successful boat builder. The article discusses the various locations of his firm, and mentions some of the prominent vessels that were produced. Details of his two eldest sons James George and George Pickering Carr, who joined their father in the business by the 1880's, are also given. His involvement in church and local body affairs is also touched upon in the article.
