Title:Famous New Zealanders no.44 Captain M T Clayton
Article Abstract:Biographical article about Captain M T Clayton, who served his apprenticeship at sea in the barques LONDON and STATESMAN, sailing in New Zealand waters in 1846. The account particularly looks at his early voyages in the vessel KENT in which he served as chief mate and later captain till 1863. Also discusses his role as a maritime artist, with mentions of some of the re-creations of famous New Zealand maritime events that he produced during his long career. He left the sea to become a Lloyds surveyor in Auckland for many years.
