Title:From Canoes to Cutters
Article Abstract:Initially there were no roads in New Zealand. There were walking tracks which became, with use, horse tracks and then waggon tracks, but moving any sizeable quantity of goods in this manner was slow and difficult. The main source of fresh food, especially in the north, were the Maoris and through the 1840s and into the 50s a sizeable canoe fleet was used to deliver the food. From 1853 the canoe fleet declined and was replaced by European-styled vessels with their fore and aft rigs. With a few exceptions the Maori-owned vessels had European names.
