Abstract: After the War, the New Zealand Rehabilitation Board loaned Captain Blair and some fellow seamen, some money to buy a ship. From this grew the Tasman Steam Ship Company which came to own a fleet of little ships from diverse backgrounds, trading across the Tasman, round the New Zealand Coast, and in the Pacific Islands. They prospered, but eventually became involved with large companies in Singapore, and the shoestring snapped. This is not a hard-luck story - it is the adventurous story of a handful of tough Kiwi mariners who laughed in the face of experts who said "it couldn't be done", and proved them wrong
