Title: Whalers and sealers (1801 - 1810)
Author: Ross, John O
Abstract: "An account of the maritime activity on the coast of NZ in the pre-colonial era, prior to 1840." Persons (usually masters, but sometimes other crew members or passengers), mentioned on vessels visiting New Zealand from 1801 onwards, have been indexed from this source, which is a photocopy of Alexander Turnbull Library MS-Papers 1500-26. Includes mention of the return by the whaler FERRETT, of the Maori traveller Moehanga, to his home in the Bay of Islands, 1806 - 1807. The return of chief Te Pahi and his sons from Sydney on the LADY NELSON in 1806 is covered in the entry for that vessel. The entry for the STAR gives details of the setting out on a voyage to London of Tara, son of the Whangaroa chief Te Puhi.
